The Basics

Colour theory is at the core of science within the beauty industry, as it affects everything from mixing foundation and concealer, to creating all shades of lipstick, blush, eyeshadow and more. When choosing your makeup, getting colours wrong can throw off your entire look. Let’s explore the basics with the colour wheel below:The colour wheel illustrates primary (1), secondary (2) and tertiary (3) colours. This wheel represents colour theory and is the basis for creating all different shades of makeup.

• Mixing primary colours together creates secondary colours and any other colours. When all three primary colours are mixed together, you get a shade of brown that can be adjusted by adding or subtracting the primary colours.
• By mixing two secondary colours, you can create a variety of undertones, such as olive (green + violet = blue-ish undertone), russet (orange + violet = red-ish undertone) or citrine (orange + green = yellow-ish undertone).

Undertones are important in makeup because it is your skin's undertone, combined with how fair or deep your skintone is, that make your shade unique. One way to identify your undertone is to check the veins on your wrist. If they look blue, you have cool undertones. If they look green, you have warm undertones. If you seem to have both blue and green veins, you have neutral undertones.

Cool Vs. Warm

When we talk about cool and warm tones, we are comparing the colour to things that make us think of warmth or things that are cooling. Warm colours are reds, yellows and oranges (like fire, the sun etc) and cool colours are blues, greens and purples (like water, plants etc). Colours can have warm or cool undertones too, so you can have a cool-toned red or a warm-toned green, for example.
You can swatch your foundation against your jawline, and if it appears too yellow, red or even orange, it is likely too "warm" for your skin tone. If it appears too purple, blue or even green, it is likely too "cool" for your skintone. Cool tones can make white shades appear brighter, so a good tip if you love lipstick is to choose a lipstick shade with a cool undertone, to make your teeth appear whiter!

Wear Your Makeup With Confidence!

If you've ever noticed extreme flashback in photos, or areas of the skin that appear grey, it is usually down to the shade of makeup you are wearing. Your understanding of colour theory allows you to choose the right beauty products for your unique skintone, and mix formulas and colours, so you can wear your makeup with confidence!
